One of the HRs in my company is a close friend of mine, I happen to ask her the same question. Asking somebody to leave the company or otherwise get fired is a hard task, given the fact that the situation at hand may turn embarrassing or ugly. You have to agree that it is a hard job. She told me that while firing someone, it is important to be upfront with the employee. She said, “I prefer to set the record straight.” She actually meant that tell the reason for firing the performance; you may sit with her/his performance review or ask the manager to be the part of the meeting so that all the answers of the going person can be answered. Prefer a discussion over the argument; ensure the person that you will help them out in finding a new job and will try your best to make their exist easier and less painful.
